F1 Shocker: Lewis Hamilton Set to Exit Eight-Time Champion Team Mercedes for a Deal with Ferrari.
Lewis Hamilton is reportedly on the verge of a shocking move from Mercedes, where he secured six of his seven world championships, to Ferrari, according to Motorsport. The negotiations for his shift to the Italian team for the 2025 season are said to be in the final stages, with an announcement anticipated very soon. It’s been reported that the Mercedes team members were to be informed this morning (UK time), followed by a formal declaration later in the day.
Since Hamilton’s switch from McLaren to Mercedes, the team clinched eight constructors’ championships. However, they have been struggling in the recent two seasons, with Hamilton not achieving a victory since the 2021 Saudi Arabia race.
The report indicates that Ferrari has shown a persistent interest in acquiring Hamilton, but he has historically turned them down, believing that Mercedes provided a more promising path to triumph. Nevertheless, following two difficult seasons for Mercedes, it seems that Ferrari is on the verge of persuading Hamilton that it represents a more favorable option for his future.
It’s reported that Hamilton entered into a multi-year deal starting in 2024, yet the contract for the 2025 season might have included an “option” clause, allowing him the choice to opt-out early.
Should he transition to Ferrari, it’s anticipated that he would team up with Charles Leclerc, who just recently renewed his contract with the team.
Carlos Sainz, currently bound to a contract for only one additional season, might consider a switch to Mercedes for the 2025 season. However, there are also rumors connecting him with Audi, presently associated with Alfa Romeo/Stake.
During the 2023 season, Hamilton was involved in extensive discussions to extend his stay with Mercedes into 2024. He consistently expressed confidence in the team’s ability to improve their performance in the upcoming seasons. “We’ve been in this position before, and despite many new members, our core values remain strong, and I see a consistent dedication across the team,” Hamilton remarked at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
He acknowledged that the team had misjudged the situation in 2023, believing that minor adjustments would suffice. “This misconception led to my frustration in February, as the necessary changes I had suggested were not implemented,” he said.
However, he remained hopeful about the impact of the adjustments being made. “I’m optimistic about the direction we’re taking, although it’s uncertain how Red Bull will respond,” he added.
The team’s principal, Toto Wolff, and technical director, James Allison, are both securely under long-term contracts with Mercedes. However, if Hamilton finalizes a move to Ferrari, they will be tasked with seeking a new teammate for George Russell.
Despite this, finding a replacement shouldn’t pose a significant challenge given the high interest in the position. Nonetheless, Lando Norris, another prominent British driver, won’t be an option as he has committed to McLaren with a contract extension beyond 2025.
